Frosted Fern (AKA "Oakie Dokie") Niebling Variation of "Oak"

While I force myself to do more of the Boundary Waters edging/torture, I have also taken time to do the Knit-along for the NieblingLaceKnitters Yahoo group. This is a free pattern titled "Frosted Fern" that is a variation of a larger Niebling Pattern called "Oak". I'm using Cebelia #30 with the center leaves knit on US 00 and then switched to US 0 circular needles. I would have stuck with US 00 if I had good needles, but the circulars I had in a "no name" brand in size 1.75 mm were so horrid that I flung them across the room and then into the trash. Did you know that Addi Turbo circular needles don't come in US 00? They jump from US 000 to US 0. I guess they don't care that I have a gap in my knitting needle collection now. I will have to go to Lacis and look and see if Inox has them in the size I want. You know something, as I write these words I just realized I never tried using my Addi Turbos on the WRS because I just assumed they would be too slick. Right about now, slick might be a really good thing. Hmm....... I think will have to finish Boundary Waters edging first. I'm so darned close to the end, if I stop and try the Turbos on WRS and it works better than the Inox, I will not finish the Boundary Waters Shawl, much less the edging for Sampler Stole (also in progress). Have a good evening and good knitting!

The Oak is magnificent! Shame on Skacel for omitting such an important size in their needle products. I am beyond irked to learn of this malfeasance.

Stick to the Boundary Waters. It will all be worth it in the end! I'll be here cheering you on. :-)

The colour is lovely - and the doily is looking great.

Well done for showing those no good needles who is boss. May they rot in .... wherever bad needles go to die.

I searched for size 00 circulars several months ago - to no avail. I tried Addi and Inox and couldn't find them.

Eunny's Print O' the Wave pattern specified that size, so I contacted her but she said she didn't know where she'd purchased hers and had had no success finding a current source.

So if you find some, warn them before you tell us, because there's going to be a big run on them.

Of course it's exquisite! It's a LaceFreak!

And Lacis does carry 00 circulars. I think HiyaHiyas are available in that size as well. I forgot who carries them--The Knitter?

And plbbbt to you: I finished the border for the Black Widow yesterday. Just have to do the graft.

HiyaHiyas are carried by the Knitting Zone, and they have circs in both 00 and 000. I like their joins better than the Inox, too. They're stainless steel, so they're a bit grippier than nickle-plated.

I used nickle-plated needles with the lacis yarn--either addis or knitpicks--and thought the combination was pretty perfect. :)

Your Frosted Fern is just lovely, of course. :)

Your Frosted Fern looks great.

If you ever find circulars comparable to Addis in size #00, please let me know. I am just as annoyed as you are about the "missing link". Especially at those sizes, having to jump to the next size up or down is not a good option.

Dear Opal,

I'm working on that edging in fits and starts but it will get done eventually. I really can't get over the fact that Addi Turbos don't come in US 00. The ones I threw away were from Lacis and were in their store packaging so who knows where they came from. I let them know how much I did not like them but they don't have any in 1.75 mm in Inox either. I see there are suggestions from others who read my post so I think will be ordering some needles off the net soon! See a void and fill it I always say :-)

Dear littleberry,

Thanks for the encouragement. Edging is always torture so every bit helps! It's actually a nice deep blue. I only have one ball of this color in this dye-lot (originally got it for tatting) so I hope this doily doesn't need more than that !

Dear Soo,

I'm a bit vindictive. I actually tried to yank the cord out from the needles but it was too tough so I took scissors to them to express just how far they had pushed me! Knitting Temper. Not a pretty sight! I think they went straight to knitting needle Hell and are even know forced to knit synthentic yarn for the rest of eternity! Hah!

Dear Barbara P,

Both fleegle and missalicefaye have saved me from a life of emptyness and dispair! They have forgotten more than I will ever know about knitting and resources! The Knitting Zone does indeed carry HiyaHiyas (a brand I am not familier with) and they come, bless them, in US 00. I am going to buy some and let you all know how they work out!

Dear fleegle,

Congratulations on reaching the end of the edging. (Sound of applause) I can't wait to see it all blocked and beautiful! Thank you for helping me with the issue of my lack of US 00 circulars. Both you and missalicefaye always know everything!Rest up and graft!

Dear missalicefaye,

Went to Knitting Zone and shouted Eureka! Those needles look great so I think I will be ordering from them. Thank you for your help. You and fleegle are the "go to" women for issues of knitting Karma and supplies! Good to know you had good luck with the nickle needles as well. It gives me hope with my WRS. I have to nudge every single stitch over the join with that so I don't think it could get much worse! Glad you like the doily. This was a knit-along but it was on my list of ones to do. Not difficult at all so far.

Dear Z's momma,

I like the pattern too. On the Yahoo group everyone has started posting progress it it is one of those patterns that looks good in any weight yarn or thread at all. Actually, it would be a nice introduction to Niebling and the pattern is free! Anyone interested in knitting his more intricate patterns could kind of break-in on the ground level so to speak by knitting this so they could become familer with his style. The Yahoo Group has also taken the trouble to chart the pattern so anyone who joins the group would benefit from that if they dislike written instructions! A little plug for the groups efforts :-)

Dear fluffbuff,

I must agree that it is highly annoying that finding US 00 is so difficult. I'm going to order the HiyaHiya's from Knitting Zone and let everyone know how they work out. Still, If I go into a "regular" knitting store or LYS most don't even go lower than US 1 or US 0 much less lower still, so I guess my expectations are a bit unrealistic. That does not stop me from wanting my needles however!I'll let you know how it comes out.

Frosted Fern is a freebie? Really!? Where would one find this?

Lacefreak said...

Deaar Ted,

You can find the pattern here (http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/KnitFrostedFern.html) but it is not charted. It is a written pattern here. If you join the Yahoo group they have charted it for our knit-along. Good Luck with it!

Addi doesn't make 00? Seems silly. Why make all the others and not that one?? Lovely shawl! I adore coming here and being impressed by the lace!

Another beautiful piece of lace knitting in the making. :: sigh :: I signed up for the Yahoo Group immediately! But do I dare try the knit-along now? :-)

Lacefreak said...

Dear Carol,

I was dumbfounded as well to find that Addi Turbos do not come in US 00. I have no idea if their lace needles do or not however so I will have to go check. I am happy that you enjoy coming to look at what I've been knitting. I know I like to see what everyone has been up to as well! Of course, the internet is one of the few places a person can display their addictions and still appear socially acceptable LOL!

Dear Jason,

How wonderful that you have decided to try the knit along! It is not too late to join and there is no law that says you have to keep to the suggested schedule of how many rows to try to do each week. It's ment to be fun, not a job! Being circular, the first rows are quick but if you notice the suggestions for compleation, each week you do less rows because they get longer as the doily gets bigger. It will be fun to see your version of Frosted Fern!

I'm now catching up on blogging. All I can say is WOW!! Your Lyra is absolutely beautiful. Is it just Niebling patterns or would you consider yourself slightly doily obsessed? Such beautiful doilies. I can't wait to see this one completed. Has crochet become a little more enjoyable?

Lacefreak said...

Dear knitsanity,

Nice to hear from you as always! I like how the shawl came out even if it is a small one. I think it's going to be mostly the Niebling patterns that interest me. I have had all the volumes of the Gloria Penning doily for years and years but have only knit 3 into shawls, none as doilys. Of the Niebling patterns my interest leans towards the ones with floral elements. Not so much for the more traditional types. He does some weird things like steep decreases and increases and sometimes the patterns look squished, but I'm still impressed and I really love knitting them. You can't ask for more than that!Still not loving crochet even though there are tons of very great crochet doily patterns out there. I can live with that though!
