Winter Slow Down (Row 73 of Salmon Queen)

Short post since my knitting is suffering the usual "Winter Slow Down" as I run around shopping and preparing for holiday baking. I have 26 points on the edge for the Princess, I'm on row 73 of the Salmon Queen doily a you can see above. I have a close shot of the "crossed stitches" that you see in lots of the Niebling patterns that he looks like he puts in for texture. I continue to slowly put more edging on the Sampler Stole. I decided to leave in the abrupt color changes in the edge since it I have no desire to have to weave in multiple ends and anyone who gets this yarn might as well see that this is something it does. I spend more time planning next years projects rather than starting new ones. I have plenty to work on in the mean time :-) Good Evening and Good Knitting!

Aren't it just those little details that make a good pattern a great pattern?

I do love the colour of the Salmon Queen. Gorgeous.

The color (and the knitting, of course) are mouthwatering. What is the yarn again? Too lazy to go back and search....

On row 161 of Lyra...

That is one of the most outstanding Niebling design features: lace and texture. Gotta love it!

So you're almost halfway if you decide to do the 62-point edging! :)

Salmon Queen is lovely--I feel Niebling temptation growing stronger...

Your Salmon Queen is looking lovely. This is done with 000 needles, yes?

Have your new super small needles(0000) arrived yet? How do you like them?

During all your free time (ha ha), would love a quick review of the new needles. You know, in all your spare time...

I just love the detail of the textured stitches. Thanks for sharing that.

Dear uhltje,

I really do like the variety of having the texture stitches. It makes it much more interesting to knit. Of course, it's another opportunity to mess up as well LOL.

Dear Soo,

Thanks! Glad you enjoy it. I like the color too. There are lots of nice colors of crochet or tatting thread out there for doilys but I do have a nice supply of white I'm thinking of using for a project. But that's for next year :-)

Dear fleegle,

I'm lazy. I like Flora 50 and I have stashed lots and lots of it because it's no longer being made. I'm enjoy knitting with it, like the way it looks and the way it blocks and it comes in nice colors!

You are soooo close to finishing Lyra! I can't wait to see her in all her glory!

Dear Lartiza,

I must say that the combination of the lace and texture really make knitting his designs fun. It keeps my atttention and since I used to love to knit cables, it's the best of both worlds. I really do love his stuff.

Dear missalicefaye,

I'm going for the full number of points so I'm still a ways off from getting done. I know I won't get that much done in December :-( Too many other things to do. But I will get a fresh spurt of energy in the New Year I know! How far along are you? I love the color of your Princess and you are so quick. I imagine you are almost done with the edging yourself!Besides, we are all using you as the canary in the coal mine. If you don't keel over from knitting the edge then neither will we :-)

Dear Z's momma,

It's a little confusing right at this point. I did the center of the doily using US 000 steel double pointed needles by Addi. They worked just fine. Then went to Addi Turbo needles in US 000 that were 16 inches. They worked ok but not great points and then went to the grey Inox first in US 00 but they felt too big so I ripped back and used US 000 in 24 inches in the grey Inox. The bump at the end of the needle where the cable joins still is annoying but does not affect the knitting so much because the thread is tougher than yarn and not as likely to shread. The Inox stink with single ply cobweb yarn because of that bump but for this project it is acceptable. I've used the HiyaHiya needles on the WRS and it's nicer at the join though not as nice and point as the Inox were. Not much of a review but as I use more needles I'll let you know!

Dear Opal,

I like to post a few pictures of some of those Niebling elements since I find them interesting myself. Of course, it helps if you already have experience with this type of knitting.

Dear Courtney,

Thank you! My stitches are not always that even but there is a lot of manipulating going on here so I'm satisfied with how it's developing. I hope it's pretty once it's all done.

Dear knitmd,

Thank you! It hope it will turn out nicely but it's a pretty color and it's been interesting and fun to knit so far :-)

That is wonderful! I am recently taken with this knitting style (thanks to your work, in part) and I look forward to seeing this one progress. I am working on a 119 row doily designed by Zdenka Holacka, from an old Special Diana Strickdeckchen, and it also has these textured areas that are so interesting to knit. Thanks for the great inspiration!

You have really sold me on Herbert Niebling! I really must something of his. Your doily is stunning!

Lacefreak said...

Dear badcatdesigns,

You have quite a few projects on your site so I'm impressed you have made time to work on a doily. I can't wait to see how it looks. I really do like the ones with textured areas. I don't know much about the "modern lace knitting" of that era but it's nice of others get a chance to look at some of these patterns and knit them again. I think it's well worth a try so I'm happy you are enjoying yourself!

Dear amanda,

You may want to try the "Frosted Fern" that is a free pattern off the internet. It's a Niebling variation and the NiebllingLaceKnitters Yahoo group has been knitting it as a knit-a-long so if you want to join them, you could get the charted version of the pattern from them if you prefer that to the written pattern listed in the left hand side of the blog. I hope you enjoy knitting a Niebling as much as I did!
