Hyrna Finished (A Quick Knit)

Well, Hyrna is done and blocked and it ended up being a very quick knit once all was said and done. You have pictures of my friend, Louise who is wearing it for me, a picture of it unblocked and then a few of it blocked. The color ended up rather nice but it made me really want to knit something bright and colorful. I've been working on the Salmon Queen Doily and knocked off a few rows on the International Shawl, but not enough for me to show you. I have, however, decided to knit a shawl from the Spring '08 Knitty. It's called Laminaria and I wanted to knit it because it has Estonian Lace stitches in it and will be good practice for my International Shawl which will have some Estonian lace in it as well. It also might be a nice quick knit to lighten up my knitting in general. The yarn I'm going to use is another handspun project from Black Bunny Fibers in colorway "Carnival" It's 4 ounces of 50/50 Border Leicester/Mohair Top with a little cream colored Suri Alpaca Top mixed into one of the ply to lighten up the intense color and add a little more softness. I know the lace pattern is not likely to show well with such a colorful yarn, but I just couldn't help myself. I hope you can all bear with me as I go off on a color trip :-) Can you tell I wish it were Summer already? Hope you are all knitting fun things and enjoying yourselves!

Oh, it's gorgeous! I'm working on Hyrna right now, just started the final chart, and I hope mine looks as nice as yours when I'm done.

Your Hyrna is beautiful. And fast. And you spun that yarn. Amazing!

Hyrna is gorgeous! I'm looking to spin for Laminaria too. I just haven't quite decided on which fiber to use. You're quite the inspiration. :)

It's wonderful, Jane! And about time that you knit something bright and cheerful! Quick knits are fun, too--instant gratification :)

Your Hyrna is gorgeous. I've seen others finished, but this is the first time that I've noticed that the ending echoes the beginning. Very cool! Although I do love the subtle colour in Hyrna, I hear you about needing something bright!

Love your Hyrna, it looks very good in that yarn. I have also started Laminaria but not in as colorful yarn as you, but I love your yarn choice it is so cheerful

oooh--it's lovely! And I'm so fascinated by your spinning that I pulled out my little spindle this weekend to practice a bit. Now I'm aspiring to eventually spinning laceweight like you. :)

Now that is a very bright red! I like it.

Very beautiful. I hadn't heard elsewhere that this was a quick knit :0) Looking forward to seeing the red creation and learning more about Estonian stitches.

Yours is the first variegated one I've ever really admired--I think because the color shifts are so subtle. Very lovely job! :-)

Dear agneta,

Thank you! I like how it came out too!

Dear littleberry,

If you reall look at it, this shawl only has two elements. The lattice and the diamonds. Once you get someone to explain the instructions (thank you Jackie), it's really fast and easy :-) I may be using too small a needle size for the Laminaria but I don't want to start over. When I'm done I intend to stretch the heck out of it :-)

Dear Donna,
I hope yours comes out nicely too! All the one's I've ever seen have been very pretty so I think your chances are very very good :-)

Dear z's momma,

I spun these singles thick so it was very fast, unlike the fiber I'm spinning on the Schacht. That is going to take forever! A quick spin for a quick knit :-)

Dear Opal,

I don't know if the Black Bunny in Oranges/Reds is the right color, but is sure was available :-) The Laminaria looks nice but I'm not going to worry if this does not look good. It's value as practie for the International Shawl is more important to me right now. I can't wait to see what you decided to spin. Most of the people who are knitting this look like they are trying for variations of greens.

Dear fleegle,

I am enjoying the color hit right now and if it's quick to knit, so much the better since so many of my projects are not.

Dear Dave,

It's weird, but until I actually knit this, I did not really understand that it's only the two design elements. the lattice and diamonds and that's it. I like the gentle color shifting in the shawl but I'm starving for bright color right now. I promise to be more practical the next thing I knit.

Dear stashdiva,

I think Laminaria is a pattern that wlll prove very popular and I think the instructions for it are really well done. I'm glad you like the color choice I made. Now if it only will look good once done!

Dear missalicefaye,

I have never gotten the hang of spinning with spindles. My sister loves it and has so me beautiful spindles and she also spins lace weight on them :-) She says she finds it relaxing to use the spindles. It's just not fast enough for me however LOL

Lacefreak said...

Dear Carol,

Thanks! I hope I can do it justice :-)

Dear Sherilan,

Once I understood the chart, it was really very quick. It's knot on pretty good sized needles US 5 or US 6 and it's not really that many rows to make. I think most people get hung up because the chart is a little confusing. Still, once you get it, the pattern really flies off the needles :-)

Dear badcatdesigns,

I like how the color came out too. For once, the color transitions in the yarn ended up looking a lot like the fiber did in it's original state. That doesn't always happen for me. I was just plain lucky!

Dear taxasstrickkeren,

I'm no expert but sometimes I get on a roll with a project and knit straight through to the end. That is not always the case as you can see by my multipal projects. Your Hyrna is beautiful!

Lacefreak said...

Dear Beth S,

I'm happy it came out as well as it did. I'm not always so sucessful with my spinning, more's the pity. I'm trying to do a little more handspun lace this year but you can bet not all of it will look good (like the Polworth sigh).

Kat said...

Wow, gorgeous! Your spinning is just amazing. I might get to that level some day, far in the future. ;-)

Lacefreak said...

Dear Kat,

Spinning is one of those weird areas for me. I'm not all that good at it actually and I'm not at all technical about it. I learned to spin a long time ago and then stopped for y ears. it's nice for me to get back into the habit though sometimes it's tough to figure out what to do with some of the stuff I've spun. There is a big gap between what I want to experiment with and what will work out with lace. I may have to stretch the idea of "lace" to use some of the bigger stuff I spin :-)

Hyrna is beautiful and what a difference blocking makes! So I was scrolling through the calm cool pics of Hyrna this morning, without coffee yet, and came to your first picture of Black Bunny Fibers and, let's just say I don't need coffee now. That looks like a fun color! I look forward to seeing it form into something.

Dear domesticshorthair,

I love how the apperance of lace changes once it's blocked too! The Black Bunny fiber/yarn is very bright so who knows if it will make good lace or not. But I'm willing to give it a try :-)
