Hannelore (Whiz Bang)

After so many projects that take me months to finish I just wanted one that would be fast. Hannelore is another Herbert Niebling pattern. At 142 rows I had to knit it on US 3 needles to get a shawl of any size. About 40 inches across, 50 inches diagonal, I used 100% Tussah Silk yarn "Shimmering"in the Clafoutis colorway from A Verb For Keeping Warm. It took 10 days to knit and it has none of the "hex mesh" you see in the usual Niebling pattern. The silk gives it terrific drape and I will likely wear this one to Stitches West this year. I actually think I like this pattern better than Lyra. Back to the UFO's :-)

WOW again! 10 days to produce that...

It is beautiful and a pretty colour of pink!

I would have thought that something like this would take months and months to make, and you say it took you ten DAYS? Goodness, I thought I was fast but this would take me quite a few weeks, if not more. Well done!
The pattern is extremely pretty, it looks like a really interesting knit - I am not keen on large expanses of 'mesh'. The colour is glorious too.
Is the pattern available to buy online anywhere?

Congratulations again, this is very beautiful. A sumptuous, delightful lace shawl! Can't help myself, I am jealous...

Beautiful!
What book is it in?

I managed a much simpler/smaller shawl in two days back in December, and it is really nice to be able to produce something lovely so quickly when you have a ton of long-term stuff on the needles!

It's absolutely lovely!

Love it:-)

Jane, I think of all your shawls, I love this one the best. It's simply fantastic. Have to put that one on my list. Nice and short!

Not only is it drop-dead gorgeous (and I don't even much like pink!) but you knit it in 10 days? I bow to your ability to bend the time-space continuum!

Dear Amanda,

Thank you! I have always loved this pattern and knitting it with the larger needles made everything very easy and relaxing.

Dear Yarnlot,

Thank you! I wish you could see it in person as well. My picture taking skills are not able to catch the fact that the shawls yarn is slightly variegated and has a pretty sheen.

Dear LittleBerry,

See! I really can knit faster than a snails pace sometimes :-) Actually, this pattern was fun to knit. Lyra was that way too. Not a chore but a pleasure. I was sad when it was all done. I think I'd even knit it again and I almost never do that.

Dear Giselle,

I'm so glad you like this one! I also couldn't believe how fast it made up. The pattern is a vintage one that has not been re-published yet I'm afraid. I got mine on E-Bay quite some time ago.

Dear Laritz,

This beauty is in Burda Special STRICKSPITZE E418 It has lots of very pretty patterns in it.

Dear KPiep,

I agree with you. It really is nice to have a few projects that are quick and satisfying. Not all my lace should be "delayed gratification" :-)

Lacefreak said...

Dear Agneta,

I'm so glad you like that one. I have always had a soft spot for it. I think it has great lines and proportions.

Dear fleegle,

I think you would really like knitting this one. No hex mesh and it sits nicely across the shoulders if you fold one corner down and have that as the back of your neck. With a more substantial yarn it could be even bigger. I just know you have some yarn that would be perfect in your stash :-)

Dear Louisa,

Thank you! Looks harder than it really is. I like that in a pattern LOL! Lots of bag for your knitting buck so to speak :-)

I cannot believe that only took you 10 days to knit, it's gorgeous.

It looks wonderful! I had to put this on my knitting list.

Jane,

It's a real beauty! Love this one. I think the recent doily I made is from Burda 418, too, though I made it from a German leaflet. Now, I want to see the whole magazine.

Dear Aoife,

Thank you!

Dear Paivi,

I hope you have as much fun knitting it as I did. It's a wonderful pattern.

Dear Sandy,

That particular magazine has a lot of really wonderful patterns in it including some that were printed in one of the Japanese Niebling books. This one is so pretty I may just have to knit it again for my niece :-)

Dear Elin,

I'm glad you like how this one came out!

that's so pretty. Square shawls drape so nicely!

Beautiful! I bet it looks especially fabulous in person in that lovely silk.

Oh that is so lovely! I'm encouraged that you were able to finish it so quickly. I might be able to do it in a month. I will have to add this pattern to my Rav queue!

Lacefreak said...

Dear Carol,

Thank you! I look kinda stupid in most shawls but this little square actually sits nicely on the shoulders with one corner dog-eared :-)

Lacefreak said...

Dear missalicefaye,

Thank you :-) It has a really nice sheen that you can't see in the pictures and the color is richer. My photography does not do it justice.

Lacefreak said...

Dear MalcomandMarcus,

Thank you! You could absolutely do it in a month! Just make sure to give yourself enough time towards the end since the rows get longer and that crochet cast off always takes longer than you think it will!

Hi again,
I already commented but I just had to add this: ever since I saw this lace on your blog I've been wanting to make it. I couldn't get Burda E418 for love nor money, but found (on Ravelry) that it was also published by Beyer in Band 408. This has recently been reissued as Band 408 and 760 (or similar) and is available by Amazon. Guess what, I've got it and I can't wait to cast on!
I'm just in love with this pattern, no hex mesh is such a big bonus. Now if I could just get my humongous amount of WIPs down so I can start this one...

Lacefreak said...

Dear Giselle,

I'm so glad you got that pattern! Make sure you check on Ravelry on the Herbert Niebling group. I belive there is a correction for that pattern that you need to make. If you are not part of Ravelry, let me know and I will get the correction to you!!!

Good Luck!

Jane,
The pattern that you used, was it in German? I'm wanting to knit this for the center of my wedding veil, and bought an English book of Niebling because Ravelry said it was in there, but sadly it isn't. So, I'm going to buy it, but I have no clue how to read German and want to make sure I can still do it before I get it!

Lacefreak said...

Dear Elizabeth,

The pattern that I have is in German. I believe this pattern has been re-printed in one of the recent portfolios but is not square in that version. It too, is in German. I knit my Niebling's using a stitch key translation from German to English. Most stitches are straight forward but sometimes there are instructions in German that may matter a lot to some people. As I recall, there may be twisted stitches in this pattern to make some elements "stand out" similar to the use of twisted stitches to make cables stand out on a cable sweater. I did not do any of this since I was making a shawl and had no desire to make the elements pop up. If you are on Ravelry, you can ask questions in the Herbert Niebling group they have or PM me on the Ravelry group since I am lacefreak there as well. Good Luck!
